INTERNING AT THE HOUSTON AREA WOMEN'S CENTER

OVERVIEW

The Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC) offers several challenging unpaid internships throughout the academic year. The internships at HAWC have been designed to provide selected individuals with hands-on experience to help them prepare to launch a career in social services.

 

The selection process is highly competitive and qualified applicants will have to go through an interview process. If accepted, we do provide training that is required. In some cases, hours in training can go towards required intern hours.

 

HAWC offers different intern opportunities that may satisfy the requirements of several degree programs including: Law School, MSW and Graduate Level Counseling.  Internship opportunities are also available for those in an undergraduate degree programs.

    Spring 2017 - FULL

    OVERVIEW

    Interns will provide crisis intervention and case management for women and children who have been victims of domestic and/or sexual violence.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    ·         Minimum 500 hours

    ·         2 Semester commitment

    ·         Bachelor’s degree in social sciences of equivalent work experience

    ·         Minimum one year experience in case management at a social service agency

    ·         Knowledge of community resources for adults and children needing emergency services including legal financial support, housing or basic needs.

    ·         Working knowledge of Texas laws pertaining to family violence as well as the justice system response to domestic violence

    ·         Sensitivity to cultural diversity

    ·         Experience with Microsoft Office

    ·         Strong case management and crisis intervention skills

    ·         Majors in Social Work, psychology, sociology, paralegal, etc. 

    TRAINING

    ·         Crisis intervention training  – all dates required (see training below)

 

 

 

TRAININGS

 

CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING: an intensive three (3) week fifty-four (54) hour training. Training is held every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday during the 3 week period.

 

The next Crisis Interventions Training is January 21, 2017 - February 9, 2017

Thursday – January 26th, 9am-12:30pm or 5:30-9pm

Wednesday – February 1st, 9am-12:30pm or 5:30-9pm

Thursday – February 2nd, 9am-12:30pm or 5:30-9pm

Saturday – February 4th, 9am-5:30pm

Tuesday – February 7th, 9am-12:30pm or 5:30-9pm

Wednesday – February 8th, 9am-12:30pm or 5:30-9pm

ATTENDANCE TO ALL DAYS IS REQUIRED.

 

 

CHILD CARE TRAINING: an 8 hour training required. Prepares interns to work with children who are survivors or witnesses to family violence.
