2016 Back to School Project

Summer's in full swing, which means we're gearing up for our annual

Back-to-School Project

On August 12 and 13, we'll distribute new backpacks and school supplies to the children receiving services at the Houston Area Women’s Center. These are children who have experienced sexual abuse and exploitation, domestic violence and/or were witnesses to such crimes. Last year we distributed nearly 1,100 new backpacks and school supplies, thanks to our supporters.

We hope to help our youngest clients feel good about themselves by sending them back to school with new backpacks and appropriate supplies, just like all the other kids. Volunteers will create supply bags for each grade and the children will have the opportunity to choose their backpacks. Parents will receive a packet of useful community resources and information.

Here's how can you help:

If available, use your company match!

  • Payless gift cards ($10 denominations are most helpful)
  • Mesh backpacks in all colors
  • Boys' and girls' underwear (grades 5-12

Donations are needed by Wednesday, August 5. The Puzzle Party will be taking place from 11 am – 2 pm, so be sure to stop by for freshments to celebrate our donors! Check our Facebook page after to see the photobooth pictures!

Every year, the Back-to-School Project is made possible thanks to our supporters who collect loads of supplies and backpacks, our wonderful volunteers who spend countless hours sorting and packing the supplies, and our dedicated Back-to-School committee and staff who help coordinate the project.
