Year-End Campaign

As we embark on this holiday season, we at the Houston Area Women’s Center are taking some time for
somber reflection. 2017 has been a year of challenges, bringing our community the worst storm in history. It’s
also been a year of triumphs, as our Houston Astros brought home our first ever World Series Championship.
And most recently, it’s brought utter despair with the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs that took the lives of
26 innocent people. This last tragic event is of particular concern to those of us at HAWC for many reasons,
but first and foremost, because it could have been prevented.

The Sutherland Springs shooter had been convicted in 2012 by the U.S. Air Force for abusing his wife and child – he was a perpetrator of domestic violence. Legally, he never should have had a gun, but a clerical error allowed him to buy one. More than half of all mass shootings in the U.S. since 2009 have had some connection to domestic or family abuse. The Houston Area Women’s Center grieves with Sutherland Springs, and we also grieve with the 146 families who lost a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend in Texas to domestic violence in 2016.

Through it all, we remain hopeful. We know that different outcomes are possible because we witness our
clients achieving them every day. With options, resources and relentless hard work and encouragement,
they can build lives free from the violence they’ve endured. The Houston Area Women’s Center is committed
to these survivors’ successes and to ending domestic and sexual violence for ALL. To do this, we need your
help.

In October, we shared the story of one such survivor, Hannah*. She married her high school sweetheart, seemingly the “perfect guy,” expecting a fairy tale, only to end up in a horror story. Threatened at gun point, she narrowly escaped with her life. Hannah found help, safety and a new life – all starting with her call to our Hotline. Support like yours made this possible.

As you are considering your year-end giving, please remember Hannah and the many others like her. Your
gift will be life-saving and life-changing.
