Text that will be added to your email:
On Saturday, March 6, 2010 I will join nearly 1,500 domestic and sexual violence survivors, family, friends, and community supporters for the Houston Area Women's Center 22nd Annual Race Against Violence presented by The Texas Woman’s Hospital.
I chose to send you this letter because I hope you will share my commitment to create change in our community. Our combined gifts allow the Women’s Center to provide comprehensive services to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, as well as offer community education and awareness programs that are crucial in the efforts to end violence. The continuing financial support of donors like you and me will ensure that the Women’s Center will be able to grow in both size and spirit.
By coming together now, we can turn today’s tragedies into tomorrow’s history:
In 2007 in Texas, 104 women were murdered by their intimate male partners. Texas Department of Public Safety, 2007
In Texas, there were 8,430 reported rapes in 2007. This is one rape per hour. Texas Department of Public Safety, 2007
In homes where partner abuse occurs, children are 1,500 times more likely to be abused. American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence, 2005
70% of women with pets who reported domestic violence indicated that their pets had been threatened, hurt or killed by their abusive partners. The Humane Society, 2006
During 2006 in Texas, there were 275,539 alleged victims of child abuse and neglect. Of these 67,737 were confirmed. In Harris County, there were 35,033 alleged and 6,883 confirmed victims. Texas Depart of Family & Protective Services 2006 Data Book
Please join me in the Race Against Violence. With our combined efforts, we all stand to benefit from the assurance of life-saving services for those in need today and the promise of a safer community and brighter tomorrows.
