Our Mission

The Houston Area Women's Center helps individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence in their efforts to move their lives forward.  We provide shelter, counseling and advocacy to support them in building lives free from the effects of violence.  We seek social change to end domestic and sexual violence through community awareness and education.  Our services are confidential and available to everyone.

A note from a survivor of domestic violence who stayed in our shelter

"I am a survivor of domestic assault and this is a long journey for me…this place is helping me. The staff here is so diverse, I learn from all of ya’ll. At the end of the day we’re still people and a written thank you is deserved. I’m dead tired. This month is going to be long, but I’m confident! The shelter strengthens me! I’ve never been blessed, fortunate, and empowered by so many women. I know I ask a lot of questions and tell my business, but I do it because this is my safe house and I’m learning from all of ya’ll. I know your profession is rewarding because I am one that’s practicing what’s being preached. So, I’m going to keep going and knowing that ya’ll don’t judge me and keep your professionalism. But, you still have empathy, compassion, and most of all love and understanding of domestic violence [survivors]. I must say thank you to you all so this is passed around and when you read this you can smile and pat yourself because each and everyone of you deserves a big thank you!"
