Child Abuse:  How to Help

Denying child abuse will not make it disappear. If you suspect child abuse is occurring, call the police and Child Protective Services abuse hotline at 1-800-252-5400. Children who receive services and support after victimization are better equipped to heal from the trauma and regain a healthy outlook on life.

What You Can Do

  • Educate children about appropriate sexual behavior, their right to say no to adults, and the importance of telling a trusted adult if something feels strange to them.
  • Children may resist reporting because of self-blame, shame, guilt or they fear angering the offender. Parents, teachers and other adults who interact with children should be educated to recognize behavioral and physical symptoms. Children are more likely to disclose when talking to someone who appears knowledgeable, non-critical and non-threatening, or if the child has received information on child sexual abuse.
  • Once a child discloses, an appropriate response is crucial to the healing process. Encourage the child to talk freely, seek medical or counseling help and reassure the child that they are not to blame. You must report child abuse.
